I prefer the wire...its cheap and lasts about 4 years, takes a lot more abuse and as long as you take precautions you won't get hurt. I've never had any issues with wire bits cutting my hands, if the wire is damaged I replace it. Costs about $7 .
I've also heard that the synthetic rope can damage the drum if its packed up tight and dry , then gets wet...not sure if that's possible, has anyone had that happen?

I have Synthetic on my winches... It is the only way to go.. Just how it will not kill you if it breaks is more than enough reason..

Pros

does not cut your hands.
Longer life span.
Will not rust
Much lighter
Will not kill you if it breaks while winching.

Cons,

Cost more...

Longer life span???...its not nearly as tough as steel when it comes to abusive situations, which by nature are pretty common when winching out of a messy spot. I've seen some pretty badly frayed synthetic cable that I'd not trust.
In theory its better, but because its so expensive its probably left on the drum too long.
Dangerous?...stepping in front of a speeding train is probably life threatening too, but somehow most of us manage to avoid that danger by taking simple precautions.
You pays your money and takes yer choice...:-)

If the cable kinks, it's toast. Granted, I firmly believe synthetic is not invincible either but I've had better luck with it so far.
